God has a sense of humor. He has little ways of reminding you not to take yourself so seriously, and laugh at yourself now & then. Like this morning...
So I was in the locker room at the Y, had showered & dressed and was putting on my makeup. It's not the rommiest of places, but it isn't crowded at the time of morning that I'm always there, so I had my little cosmetic bag sitting open on the corner of the counter at the sinks. It usually works fine, but today I accidently whacked my elbow on the hand dryer button, which turned on the warm blowing air - 6 inches above my stuff. Until this time, the woman at the sink next to me hadn't said anything while she was doing her own hair, but it was one of those moments that compels any witness to comment. I don't remember what she said, but it was along the lines of a compassionate kind of "oh no." I smiled, said "whoops!," moved my powder foundation out of the path of the blowing air, held down the rest of my stuff, and told the hand dryer that it could turn off now, thank you very much. It was then that I actually noticed a fine mist of powder foundation all over the front (counter height, so crotch area) of my dark pants. With an "oh," from me, and expression of pity from her, I started wiping it off with a damp paper towel, and commented that "hey, it could have been worse, right?"
So, it slowed me down a little, it was an inconvenient bump in the road (figuratively, though there could have been a literal bump on my elbow if I whacked that thing any harder!), and it could have set me off into a "great, what else will go wrong now? what a wonderful way to start my day," mood, but instead, I heard that still small voice saying "ML, it's really ok. Just smile & laugh it off."
I think He tells us that more often than we hear it though.
